Version 1.2.0
The SPM Digital Internet Radio Player brings the familiar personality of a tabletop stereo to the browser, combining direct station access with animated displays, artwork, personalized controls, and saved listening preferences.
Release Highlights
A Radio With Personality
A hardware-inspired interface combines familiar station controls with a modern, responsive browser experience.
Your Settings Remembered
The player remembers the selected station, display color, and volume for the listener's next visit.
New Features
Six Direct Station Presets
Six numbered preset buttons provide quick access to featured stations. Previous and Next controls also let listeners tune through the complete configured station catalog rather than limiting playback to the visible presets.
Dedicated Power and Playback Control
The player starts only after the listener activates it. This gives the user direct control over audio and works with modern browser rules that restrict automatic sound playback.
Animated Center Display
A digital display presents the selected station alongside an animated equalizer, scrolling marquee support for long station names, and a pulsing NOW PLAYING indicator.
Station Artwork
Station logos or supplied artwork appear inside the display, giving each selection a clearer visual identity while preserving the radio's unified design.
Sony-Inspired Volume Control
A prominent rotary-style volume control gives the browser player the tactile character of classic audio equipment while continuing to control standard HTML5 audio volume.
Personalized Accent Colors
Listeners can select the player's accent color, allowing the display and controls to reflect their preferred visual style.
Listener Experience
Saved Listening Preferences
The selected station, chosen accent color, and volume level are stored locally in the listener's browser. Returning visitors can continue with their previous configuration without creating an account or signing in.
Responsive Layout
Controls and display elements adapt across desktop and mobile widths while retaining the same core radio experience.
Clear Station Navigation
Direct presets serve favorite stations, while sequential tuning controls make the broader catalog discoverable without crowding the front panel.
Technical Foundation
Modular Three-File Architecture
Version 2 separates structure, presentation, and behavior into radio-player.html, radio-player.css, and radio-player.js. This makes future station, design, and behavior updates easier to maintain.
Native Browser Audio
Playback uses the browser's HTML5 audio capabilities, with the station catalog and controls managed in vanilla JavaScript. Bootstrap 5.3 supplies the responsive layout foundation.
Local Preference Storage
Station, color, and volume preferences use browser localStorage. The information remains on the listener's device and does not require a server-side profile.
Completion and Testing
The Version 2 player design and implementation were completed as a responsive three-file component. Its interface, player state, station selection, animated display, artwork support, volume behavior, color personalization, and saved preferences form the completed SPM feature.
The player was subsequently documented in a chronological project record on August 29, 2026. By September 12–13, the SPM Radio page was also present in the production content inventory as a published page.
Known Limitations
The player and the station streams are separate systems
The SPM player provides the interface, controls, saved settings, station selection, and browser playback connection. The audio itself is supplied by each station's external streaming server. Completing and testing the player therefore does not guarantee that every third-party station will be available continuously.
Individual station availability can change
A station may temporarily go offline, replace its stream address, restrict access by location, reach its listener limit, or discontinue a feed without any change to the SPM player. A station-specific failure does not necessarily indicate a player failure.
Browser compatibility depends on the stream
Each stream must use a format and connection that the listener's browser accepts. HTTPS pages may block insecure HTTP audio as mixed content, and browser support can differ for particular audio formats. For that reason, every configured stream should be tested independently in the browsers and devices SPM supports.
Playback requires listener action
Modern browsers commonly prevent websites from starting audible media automatically. The player intentionally waits for the listener to use its power or playback control. This is expected browser behavior and gives the listener control over when audio begins.
Saved preferences are device-specific
The selected station, accent color, and volume are saved in the current browser. They do not automatically follow the listener to another browser or device, and they may be cleared when browser storage is deleted.
