Version 1.6.0
This major feature release introduces the SPM Control Center—a unified, accessible panel that brings site tools and preferences directly to the visitor. Its guiding principle is simple: “Content stays put. Controls come to the content.”
Release Highlights
Controls Without Disruption
Site preferences arrive in a right-side panel while the visitor's current page and reading position remain in place.
Useful Preferences in One Place
Accessibility, appearance, language, utilities, and developer tools share one organized and expandable destination.
Control Center Foundation
Right-Side Tool Panel
The SPM Control Center opens as a focused panel from the right side of the screen. Visitors can adjust site behavior without leaving the page or losing the content they were viewing.
Five Expandable Sections
An accordion-based interface organizes Accessibility, Appearance, Language, Utilities, and Developer controls. Accessibility opens first so the most broadly useful adjustments are immediately discoverable.
“Site Tools and Preferences”
A clear title and subtitle explain the panel before visitors interact with it, reducing guesswork about what the gear control opens.
Accessibility Controls
Standard, Large, and XL Reading Sizes
Visitors can select Standard, Large, or XL text. The available scales are 100%, 112.5%, and 125%, providing practical reading adjustments without requiring browser-level configuration.
Enhanced Contrast
A dedicated switch increases visual separation where supported, giving visitors another way to adapt the interface to their reading needs.
Meaningful Selection Feedback
The text-size choices are presented as a labeled control group and update their aria-pressed states, allowing assistive technology to communicate which option is active.
Appearance and Language
Auto, Light, and Dark Modes
The established SPM theme controls now live inside the Control Center. Auto follows the operating-system preference, while Light and Dark allow a visitor to make an explicit choice.
Preferences Remembered
Supported selections are stored in the visitor's browser so the chosen experience can continue across SPM pages and return visits on the same device.
Translation Moved Into Context
GTranslate is organized under Language instead of occupying permanent header or footer space, making translation available when requested while keeping content areas cleaner.
Desktop and Mobile Access
TOOLS Remains at the Far Right
The desktop navigation retains the clearly labeled gear-and-TOOLS entry point, preserving a familiar location for site-wide controls.
TV, Radio, and Gear Across the Top
Mobile navigation exposes TV, Radio, and the Control Center gear directly in the top row. The gear button carries an accessible “Open Control Center” name and identifies the panel it controls.
No Extra Menu Required
Essential destinations and controls remain immediately available on mobile without forcing visitors through an additional hamburger-menu step.
Accessible Panel Interaction
Multiple Clear Exit Paths
The panel can be dismissed with its Close control, the Escape key, or an outside interaction supported by the offcanvas behavior.
Keyboard Focus Managed
Focus moves into the active panel for keyboard operation and returns to the opening control after dismissal, helping visitors maintain their place in the interface.
One Interaction Model Across Screens
The same panel structure, labels, sections, and closing behavior remain available across desktop and mobile layouts.
Expandable Architecture
Universal component: The shared right-menu fragment supplies the panel throughout SPM, while navbar triggers open the same offcanvasRight destination.
Structured growth: Utilities and Developer sections establish defined homes for additional controls without crowding the first release or scattering future tools throughout the page.
Clear project boundary: The Control Center manages visitor-facing website tools and preferences. It remains separate from the Editorial Engine's publishing authority and the Search Database's content-discovery responsibilities.
Completion and Testing
The completed Control Center passed a 15-point implementation checklist covering desktop and mobile entry points, panel opening and closing, outside interaction, Escape behavior, keyboard focus, focus return, accordion operation, theme selection, preference persistence, and responsive layout.
Auto theme synchronization was verified while changing the operating-system theme, alongside direct Light and Dark selections. The integrated Control Center was approved as the permanent home for SPM site tools and visitor preferences.
Known Limitations
Saved preferences are browser-specific
Stored settings apply to the current browser and device. They do not automatically follow a visitor to another device and may be removed when browser storage is cleared.
Auto mode depends on operating-system reporting
The Auto theme responds to the color-scheme preference reported by the browser and operating system. Availability and update behavior can vary with that environment.
Translation is provided by an external service
SPM provides access to GTranslate through the Language section, but translation availability, supported languages, and translated wording depend on the external service.
The first release establishes an expandable foundation
Utilities and Developer are intentional expansion areas. Their presence defines where future controls belong; it does not imply that every planned SPM tool was included in version 1.6.0.
